Yahweh Sends Yahweh
It is argued by some, that, the fact that Jesus Christ is “Sent” by God the
Father, is “proof” that the Father is “greater” than the Son, even in the
Godhead, as God. The “Sent”, it is further argued, is never equal to the
“Sender”.
We have two passages, from Zechariah and Isaiah, where we read of One Person, Who is clearly “Yahweh”, Who is “Sent” by Another Person, Who is also “Yahweh”.
The Name Yahweh is defined as:
“Yahweh, the proper name of the God of Israel...the one bringing into being,
life-giver, giver of existence, creator, he who brings to pass...he who
causes...the one who is: i.e. the absolute and unchangeable one, the existing,
ever-living” (F Brown, S R Driver and C A Briggs, Hebrew Lexicon, pages 217-218)
The fact that BOTH Persons are called Yahweh, is clear that They BOTH are
absolutely COEQUAL, in the Eternal Godhead as GOD.
In the first passage from Zechariah 2:6-11
“Come! Come! Flee from the land of the north,’
says Yahweh; ‘for I have spread you
abroad as the four winds of the sky,’
says Yahweh. ‘Come, Zion!
Escape, you who dwell with the daughter of Babylon.’
For Yahweh of Armies says:
‘For Honor He has sent Me to the
nations which plundered you; for he who touches you touches the apple of His
eye. For, behold, I will shake My
hand over them, and they will be a plunder to those who served them; and you
will know that Yahweh of Armies has sent
Me. Sing and rejoice, daughter
of Zion; for, behold, I Come, and I will dwell within you,’
says Yahweh.
Many nations shall join themselves to
Yahweh in that day, and shall be My
people; and I will dwell among you, and you shall know that
Yahweh of Armies has sent Me to you”
This is one of the clearest passages in the Old Testament, where we read of Two
distinct Persons, Who are called, Yahweh.
The passage teaches about the Coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. It is clear that
the Speaker is Yahweh, Who says that He is “Sent” by Another Person, Who is
“Yahweh of Armies”. The One Who is “Sent”, cannot be the same Person, as the One
who “Sends”, they are very much distinct, but coequal.
The second passage is in Isaiah chapter 48
“Draw near to Me, hearken to this;
in the beginning I did not speak in
secret, from the time it was, there was
I, and now, the Lord God has sent Me,
and His Spirit” – verse 16
The Speaker in this verse, is none other than YHWH, not as some suggest, the
Prophet Isaiah, or the king. The language used by the speaker, is clear that he
cannot be a human person. In verse 3, He says, “I
have declared the former things from the beginning”, and verse 5, “I
have even from the beginning declared it to you”. In verse 12 and 13 the
Speaker says, “Listen to Me, O Jacob and Israel, My called;
I am He, I am the First,
I also am the Last.
My hand has also laid the foundation of
the earth, and My right hand spread out the heavens”. In verse 15 we read, “I,
even I have spoken, yes, and I have called him”. Then in the verse 17, we
read, “Thus says YHWH, your Redeemer, The Holy One of Israel: “I am YHWH your
God, Who teaches you to profit, Who leads you by the way you should go”.
Can any of this be spoken by someone other than Almighty God?
In chapter 44, we read, “This is what Yahweh, the King of Israel, and his
Redeemer, Yahweh of Armies, says: "I am
the First, and I am the Last; and besides me there is no god” (verse 6). In
verse 24 it says, “Thus says Yahweh your Redeemer, who formed you from the womb:
“I am Yahweh, who made all things, who
alone stretched out the heavens, who spread out the earth by myself”.
There can be no doubt, that the Speaker in 48:16, is Himself Yahweh. It also
clear from this passage, that the Speaker, Who is Yahweh, is “Sent” by Another
Person, Who is, “Adonay Yahweh”.
Yahweh SENDS Yahweh, BOTH Who are absolutely COEQUAL, as there can be no
“inferiority” of Persons with the Name Yahweh.
